Basil
Fresh herbs are one of the best things about a backyard garden. The freshness, the flavors. There are some that are hardy and last year after year, and then there is basil.
In this cool Pacific Northwest it is still too early for basil. However it is one of my garden staples so I start it [...]
Spring & Peas
Thats right, the beginning of the garden season. There is a point in winter where the cold and dark are just tiring to the soul and all I can think of is my spring garden. But February, a full month before Spring before most anything else goes in are the peas. The initial hope for [...]

President’s Day garden cleanup!
Okay, so I have to confess.
I cheated a bit.
I hired people to help clear the beds – and it was well worth it! If you find yourself needing some help – hire Jimmy Eager at Achlys Gardens – http://www.achlysgardens.com/ Check out his site – he’s a genius.

Winter Harvest
There is something satisfying about harvesting in winter. Like I’ve succeeding in feeding myself year round.
With the abundance of seed catalogs arriving and my desire to get the garden started its nice to still be eating from last years plantings.
I pulled more carrots today, they have a nice sweetness from the winter cold.
These became [...]

While outside in the garden for even more weeding today I noticed the first Snack Jack pumpkin.
These are the same ones I didn’t know how I would fit them in earlier this year. I did and here is a picture of the very first one.
It’s about the size of an egg.
Isn’t it cute
Here I’ll [...]

Nasturtiums are one of those flowers that I never really knew anything about until I moved to the Pacific Northwest. They grow beautifully, and rapidly!
In addition to their speedy growth, and obvious nice flowers, it turns out that they are a virtual magnet for aphids. As a result, they’ve become something of a sacrificial lamb [...]
Growth in Pictures
If you can remember to take pictures at regular intervals its fun to watch the progression of the garden.
I took the first two on June 4th when the garden was in.
The rest I took today, July 4th. I have put a note in my calendar to take pictures on August 4th as well.
As you [...]
The Fruits of Labour
Some of the best fruits of my labor is the fruit itself.
Today there were fresh raspberries and blueberries for breakfast.
There is a second round of strawberries ripening and the plums are getting bigger.
There will be no nectarines or peaches this year but I will spray for the peach leaf curl this fall, I will I [...]
Happy Tomatoes…
I am thoroughlly pleased with the progress the tomatoes have made thus far. Although, I am a bit afraid of the future without tomato cages. As I mentioned in a previous entry, I’ve decided to take on a bit of a different tack with the tomatoes this year, and stake them in the French Potager [...]

Well the potatoes survived the digging and re-digging of the now re-homed of the raccoon.
As they came up on only one side of the barrel I wasn’t sure. But as they grew I continued to fill the barrel with soil. Now the barrel is full – so full I will need to remove [...]
