Evolution of a plan…

The best laid plans of…something, something, something..

I don’t think it really went awry, just different. Again, I’m reminded of the importance of being okay with change, and that no matter how much I plan, and study, and work the puzzle of companion planting, sometimes nature just changes the design without your consent.

The east end of the veg plot...
The garden as it stands now.

Pleasantly, thus far, the only thing that I’ve put into the garden square to not germinate at all was the Strawberry Spinach. Admittedly, it was a bit of an experiment - as I’d never grown it before, and had no idea what to expect. (Has anyone heard of this “Strawberry Spinach” before?) And only a bit of disappointment in the beets and leeks. I did, however, put them out in a scattered pattern in the corners of the pea section. Sadly, I can no longer discern what is a weed, and what is a plant. This will be my excuse to not weed that section.

To review - this is what I had in mind before spring kicked in:

The Original Plan

Hmm.. okay, so there are some substantial differences here. None of the carrots have happened yet, and the ones by the pea triangle are now beets. The lettuces have all been mixed around, and the radish allocation has experienced a substantial reduction, due to an unfortunate digging incident brought on by the neighborhood cats. The cat-dug area is now home to marigolds and orange peels, and anything else that will keep the little buggers out of the dirt.

In happy news, the first radishes have been harvested, and the lettuce mix is nearly ready! Check out the dark red-sails lettuce at the top - gorgeous and yummy!

Lettuce!

This weekend is tomato planting time! I’ll be using red plastic “mulch” that was recommended by Valria. Can’t wait to see the results!

Here’s a link to purchase the plastic tomato mulch that I got:

Hi from Illinois! Kurt, I take it this is also part of your garden, correct me if not. Got this web address from your Dad. I planted 5 rosebushes today to replace 2 that I lost. Bad winter for roses in IL. My vegetable garden consists of two pots with tomatoes on my patio. Last year I tried an heirloom one called “Garden Peach”, the fruit was yellow with a pinkish blush and the skin was a little fuzzy! It was really tasty. The ‘Superstition” Iris that Jeff sent me are in full bloom. Wish they would last a little longer. The cicadas are buzzing. Be glad you dont’t get them in WA. I’ll be checking your site to see how your garden progresses. Hi to Kurt from Aunt June.
