Discourage your rhubarb from flowering

If you grow rhubarb and enjoy the stalks for canning or pie or compote among other edible things you will want to discourage your rhubarb from flowering. I cut two stocks from my rhubarb this morning that were going to flower. When a Rhubarb plant flowers it takes nutrients and carbohydrates it would otherwise use for storage and additional stalks and puts it into making flowers and seeds. If you are growing the plant as decorative then of course you want the flowers, that would be the whole goal. But as an edible plant you will want to remove them when you notice them.

I find that it is early spring when they flower, here are the pictures from mine this morning; and subsequently the removed flowers.

Later in the year when I harvest some and make a Rhubarb crisp I will put the recipe in a blog, it is a great summer treat.
