The peas are in!!!
The peas are in!!!
Did you hear me? The peas are in.
Yes I realize that it is March 20th, the first day of spring and I technically shoot for getting peas in on Presidents day. I mean that’s the rule of thumb here in zone 8, right. Well I didn’t get them in on Presidents day, I hadn’t even started turning over the garden for the season yet. I could blame it on the cold winter, or my busy schedule or that Martha Stewart doesn’t put her peas in until St. Patrick’s day (which was only 3 days ago) but she isn’t in zone 8 and probably still has snow on the ground at Turkey Hill on Presidents day. Besides that, she has staff to help her turn the soil and get compost worked in before planting.
I can’t just shoot for St. Patrick’s day or the first day of spring for that matter to plant my peas. Because then I wouldn’t get them in until mid April or the beginning of May and there really is so much more to get in by then. So the peas are in, the starting gun for the gardening year. Now I can say “yes” when my friends ask oh so slyly “did you get your peas in” because they know I’ve been dilatory in getting them in. Yes, the first day of spring and The Peas Are In.
They will be up in a week or so, ok maybe two and by then I can start with some of the lettuce and spinach and, and, and, well see the basket of seeds…..its gonna be a great year in the garden.
So over the last month I got the garden turned over and some compost worked in. I took a picture I know thrilling huh, a picture of dirt. But I’m pretty excited about it. Today I got the pea trellis in and this year I have decided to put some rough twine on it to get the peas to grow up it. Last year there was a bumper crop but the plants really just hung onto themselves and looked more like a bush and they were hard to harvest. By the time I noticed some in the middle they were large and past there prime. Back to the peas, I hammered it in (the trellis of course), wrapped the twine around it criss-crossing and then planted the peas, pushed them into the soft dirt and was so excited. Of course the hoses are not hooked up to the house yet and my bottle of water was closer then the shed to get a watering can so in my urban mecca I watered the peas with bottled water. Now that will not be common form, as I plan on getting the hoses out and hooked up this weekend. Lets just hope its done before Memorial day. I realize my track record so far this year isn’t that great. But the peas are in. The season has now officially begun.

Excellent article as it has motivated me to think about constructing an above ground garden. Cheers to those of you that have acheived this. What is better than fresh vegetables? Nothing right! Congrats on the peas being in and I can’t wait for fresh peas on the plate!
